Healthcare and Hospital Grade PDA’s
The SoMo® 650Rx is a hospital-grade handheld computer made with antimicrobial materials that provide an extra layer of protection against the multiplication and spread of potentially harmful bacteria and microbes.
The President has made it very clear that he intends to update the aging healthcare system, specifically transitioning the antiquated medical chart recording system over to electronic medical records (EMR), and his stimulus package addresses that fact by introducing a multimillion dollar incentive for hospitals and clinics to make the change.
Electronic Medical Records have been shown to significantly improve hospital performance and reduce medical errors. For the newer generation of healthcare providers, this is a dream come true. Physicians and support staff (Physician Assistant’s, Nurse’s) can do all patient documentation on a touch screen tablet or PDA.
The COO of NY Presbyterian Hospital, Dr. Steven Corwin was quoted as saying, “when we put electronic ordering in place, all our physicians having to do electronic ordering, our medication errors went down by 80%.”
The reduction in medication errors is simply astounding. Aside from the lucrative financial benefits that hospitals and clinics stand to receive, the Hospital staff; Physicians, Physician Assistant’s, and Nurse’s are tooled for success as well. It has been cited that the working atmosphere has improved while productivity has increased and errors have decreased.

Small Particulars that Makes the Electronic Medical Record Software Commendable of Hospital Use
For the sake of the betterment of the system, changing a part of a chronically used method may dictate that it is a capable involvement. But if in instance the entire option was a disappointment, you would not hear it from the hospital itself that they would confess such blunder. In this situation, there are a few things that you can employ so that you can tell if the Electronic medical record software is the finest option that the hospital has made.
As testimony, the electronic medical record has been proficient by the ONC-ATCB. This shows that the EMR has been verified by a qualified organization and that it is a good investment in the part of the hospital. This can also state that doctors can fully make use this software to get things going for patients.
Also, there are testimonials that are declared by credible persons to prove the appeal of the electronic medical record software. To prove such testimonials, here are some folks attesting to the utilization of the EMR:
From Sioux City, Iowa, they said that the use of the electronic medical record is so advanced that they certainly were able to organize numerous activities in the hospital. As well as that the hospital that utilized the EMR was able to save costs from paper and also from the employed individuals who are desirable when paper works are in the hospital. Although they were not able to recover in a snap, overtime things will line up for you.
In Milwuakee, Wisconsin, they claimed that using the billing service of the electronic medical record software was able to fix their requirements in billing. Before the hospital was able to employ the billing services of the EMR, things were not good for them in terms of finance. They were not able to file their papers in the necessary time and date, and the end result being they were dropping money as each day passes by. But after getting the billing service of the EMR, things took a 160 degree turn immediately and things started to fall into their proper places.
If there is a single thing that we can say that it is not the client’s fault, it would be stopping them from complaining. This is an usual happening that we get everyday, and this is indeed normal as individuals would like to get the best of their change. In the case of the EMR, getting the official recognition and the testimonials are probably more than sufficient to convince individuals.

Finally OSCAR goes to the Hospital:
Don’t get fascinated when I say that OSCAR for hospital. OSCAR here denotes Open Source Clinical Application Resource and not the Oscar concerned with Hollywood. OSCAR is a free open source software product. It is a medical software product. Open Source Software products can be downloaded freely by anyone along with the codes. They can be reviewed and redesigned for further uses. OSCAR the open source medical software comes with General Public License (GPL) which ensures that it is available freely without any cost. General Public license also bestows the rights to people to develop and distribute this medical software. OSCAR was started by the Department of Family Medicine at McMaster University in the year 2001. This open source medical software was brought out with the aim of producing the web based EMR support for diverse academic as well as clinical functionaries. Since its inception in 2001 it has covered many small and big cities worldwide and the user base is growing day by day. Along with this other supportive services dealing with OSCAR have also came into the scene. Support companies with services like server installation, maintenance, user training and support have grown with the growth of OSCAR use. The user base of OSCAR as of May 2009 has reached a level of 700 – 800 users in places like BC, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and PEI. Ontario and BC tops the list with highest number of users. This open source medical software has experienced a tremendous growth percentage of 75% in installations in the year 2008 than the previous year. It is able to maintain a same pace in 2009 also. This web based EMR product, being an open source software product, is acclaimed widely.
A standard based approach was taken in Ontario to select the web based EMR and OSCAR has proved to be better in all of them. These tests were done with the latest and strict specifications from CMS namely CMS v3.0 specification. OSCAR can be run on ASP as well as non –ASP also. In BC the implementation and the development of OSCAR is being managed by the BC OSCAR User Group. The users and the support companies form the OSCAR community and they meet to discuss on OSCAR issues at regular intervals. And the OSCAR Canada user community is the main body concerned with the community development of this web based EMR product. Currently, the updating of OSCAR is done twice a year in the months of April and October. The updating of OSCAR and other upcoming events of OSCAR are aired for the community through the Roadmap Page on the OSCAR Canada website. There are some big contributors to the project OSCAR and they are: large institutions like McMaster University, McGill, City of Toronto, OSCAR support companies, user groups and independent clinics and users.

Understanding EMR Integration Utilities: What These Programs Mean For Hospital Registration & Medical Professionals
At first, EMR integration can seem like a daunting task. While few hospitals or doctors dispute the utility of having their records available in digital format, transferring data from one format to the other is a very difficult task. Many companies will actually decline to update their software for fear of an overwhelmingly intense transition process, while others dread the headache that such a process would entail. Savvy companies are beginning to see a third, much more appealing option: software and utilities specifically designed to help streamline EMR integration. These utilities can dramatically increase the speed and efficiency of a transition.
Software To Help Support EMR Integration
There are few changes that have quite as big an impact as a change from one form of data storage or one hospital registration program to another. Most programs inherently have their own file storage format, and changing from one to the other means that you’ll need to translate potentially thousands or hundreds of thousands of files. Hospital registration records are complex to maintain and large, yet maintaining 100% accuracy during transfer is absolutely vital. Patients must always have access to their complete medical records, so even a single error could be a crisis.
As a result, successful programs to address this kind of EMR integration were a long time in development. Recently, however, they have proven their reliability and efficiency in a number of scenarios. These tools have been shown to be safe for hospital registration, and have also been adopted by major banks and credit card companies to manage their most sensitive data. The best tools have proven themselves repeatedly with 100% accuracy and reliability, and the technology continues to improve.
Customized Assistance For Hospital Registration
One of the most remarkable changes that made this type of software so viable was the increase in its customizability. Developers began realizing that many companies would require a solution tailored to their unique situation. Whether it’s a need to frequently process massive pools of data, or to update thousands of entries across a patient database, a computer assisted solution is ideal but difficult to implement on a massive scale. A program that would work for one application would not work for another, which made each highly specialized.
The new model approaches hospital registration from a different standpoint. It is able to perform a completely unique set of tasks. In more complex situations, developers will usually work with the people who are currently responsible for the task to ensure that everything is performed to exact specifications. Automating a task can lead to significant savings of time and money in the long run.

Advanced Electronic Medical Records Usage Reduces Length of Hospital Stay
<!– @page { margin: 0.79in } P { margin-bottom: 0.08in } A:link { so-language: zxx } –>
A recent study by the W.P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University shows that patients who are admitted to a hospital with advanced electronic medical record (EMR) system implemented, experience a 22% shorter length of stay and a 13% shorter treatment time than ERs with minimal or no EMR system. The study found that hospitals who have an advanced EMR system in place offer more efficient patient care overall.
Advanced EMR vs. Minimal EMR
One reason for the increased efficiency of hospitals with advanced EMR systems is their amount of experience using an EMR system. Facilities with minimal EMR capabilities are just beginning to understand the process. A hospital with an advanced EMR system is more adept at operating the system and implementing it in patient care.
Michael Furukawa, author of the study and an assistant professor at W.P. Carey, says that systems with minimal EMR are still using a combination of electronic and paper records even with experienced users, and are likely to “actually increase the time spent on a computer — a doctor might be looking for a paper chart containing one piece of information and logging on for another — so the process is not optimal,” he says. “People with a minimally functional system will never be as efficient.”
Furukawa says this study – in addition to a subsequent study that he and his colleagues recently published on the impact of EMRs on costs, nurse staffing levels and end results – recommends that hospitals that are in the process of implementing an EMR system should lower their expectations for the length of a patient’s hospital stay and treatment time. “If you’re going to take it slow as you move through the different stages of EMR implementation, you really need to temper expectations,” Furukawa stated.
Furukawa says he is confident that systems designed and implemented with the input and approval of physicians will enhance the quality and lower the costs associated with patient care. “If [administrators and physicians] can agree on the technology and how to use it, it can be successful.”

Global Hospital Information Systems Market Analysis, Opportunity Assessment and Forecasts to 2016
The global Hospital Information Systems (HIS) market was valued at 7.8 billion in 2009 and is forecast to reach 18 billion in 2016 after growing at Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 13% from 2009. The growth in the market is primarily driven by government initiatives, hospitals trying to increase workflow efficiency and reimbursements provided by governments. Overall, hospitals strongly believe that adopting HIS will greatly increase its efficiency and reduce medical errors, thus improving patients safety and quality of care. The Electronic Medical Records (EMR) segment is the largest segment in the HIS market valued at 3.4 billion in 2009 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 15.3% over the next seven years. Practice management was valued at 1.2 billion in 2009, and is the second largest segment, growing at a CAGR of 10.8% over the next seven years. Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE), Pharmacy Information Systems (PIS) and Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) will grow at a CAGR of 12.1%, 9.7% and 10.6% respectively.
Over the past decade, the political impetus for change in almost all western countries has become stronger and stronger. Evidence has increasingly shown that the current systems are not delivering sufficiently safe, high quality, efficient and cost effective healthcare and that computerization, with EMR at the centre, is effectively the only way forward. As a result, physicians and healthcare organizations around the world are now looking to adopt more EMR technologies and major companies in the market are vying for various collaborations to reach office-based physicians. Governments in Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, New Zealand, the UK, the US and other countries have announced and are implementing plans to build integrated computer-based national healthcare infrastructures based around the deployment of interoperable EMR systems. Many of these countries aim to have EMR systems deployed for their populations within the next 10 years.

The HIS market in the US was valued at 2.6 billion in 2009 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 19.3% over the next seven years. The economic stimulus provided by the ARRA (American Recovery and Reivestment Act) will increase the adoption rates to 90% for physicians and 70% for hospitals in the US. The ARRA, signed into law by President Obama on February 17th 2009, has allocated 20 billion towards health IT (Information Technology). The ARRA promises financial incentives to providers and hospitals for the meaningful use of certified healthcare IT products.
GE Healthcare and Siemens are the two leading companies in the hospital information systems market and together account for 24% of the total market. GE healthcare is the market leader with 13% of the market share, followed by Siemens Healthcare and Cerner Corporation with 12% and 9% respectively. The GE centricity package of software is most comprehensive and successful HIS product in market. It caters to all segments of HIS and therefore evades the interoperability problem among various segments since it is based on the same centricity platform which makes it more integrated and interoperable than other IT vendors who offer specialized systems only.
